ALUMNI: Peyton Greco Named Liberty League Women’s Golfer of the Year
May 14th 2019 - TROY, N.Y. – For the second consecutive season since joining the Liberty League and Ithaca College golfer took home the league's most prestigious year-end award. Junior Peyton Greco was tabbed the 2018-19 Liberty League Women's Golfer of the Year in an official announcement on league website this morning. The accolade closes out an extremely successful campaign for the third-year native of Saint James, New York.
Greco led a youth movement for the Ithaca program during the 2018-19 season, as she was the lone returning upperclassman among the team's six members this year. She appeared in all 18 official competition rounds for the Bombers this season, which spanned a six-event schedule during the fall portion of the schedule as well as three spring tournaments. She continued her ascension into the upper echelon of the Liberty League's top players, shaving 2.20 strokes from her sophomore year average to record her first season as a collegian averaging in the 70's. The junior finished 2018-19 with a 79.11 average 18-hole score across those 18 competition rounds.
As far as tournament results went, she also continued to rack up top leaderboard finishes with regularity. Of her nine tournaments, she recorded Top-10 finishes in seven of those events. She opened the season with a bang, recording a then-career low 36-hole score of 154 (+8) to earn individual medalist honors by pacing the 42-golfer field at the season-opening Hamilton College Invitational on September 1-2. She went on to break that 36-hole mark two other times throughout the season, which culminated in her current 36-hole best of 151 (+7) in a tie for fifth-place at the Vassar Spring Invitational on April 20-21. At that Vassar event, she posted her career best for 18-hole score with a 73 (+1) during the tournament's final round. Over the course of the season, Greco also posted a fifth-place finish at the William Smith Invite, sixth-place effort with a 153 (+9) in a loaded 98-golfer field at the Mount Holyoke Invite, and a runner-up performance with a 154 (+10) at the Martin-Wallace Invite hosted by SUNY Cortland.
Greco battled hard in some challenging scoring conditions at the 2019 Liberty League Championships, hosted by Union College at Mohawk Golf Club in Schenectady, New York. Although her scores ranged a little bit higher than her season average with an opening round 81 (+8) and an 83 (+10) in her final competition round of the season, Greco marked her seventh and final Top-10 of the season in a tie for ninth-place. The effort helped her earn All-Liberty League Second Team honors.
As mentioned at the top of the release, Greco is the second straight Ithaca women's golfer to earn the award in as many seasons as a Liberty League affiliate. Last year, 2018-graduate Indiana Jones took home the honor after capping a strong senior campaign with a 71 (-1) to take individual medalist honors in the rain-shortened 2018 Liberty League Championships.
