North Salem, NY (July 18, 2017)—Salem Golf Club, in Northern Westchester County, is proud to recognize 13-year-old Zachary Shallat, who is the youngest competitor in this week’s U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, which is being played at Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover, Kansas. Shallat is the son of members John and Michelle Shallat. The Shallats, who reside in Dix Hills, New York, also are members at Colonial Springs Golf Club in Farmingdale, New York.
Zachary earned a berth in the U.S. Junior Amateur in a playoff at the Mount Kisco Country Club sectional qualifier in June. The talented incoming 8th grader is one of 156 competitors in the field, which includes only three other New York State golfers. According to the USGA, the average age of all players is 16.99. The second youngest player this year is 18 months older than the Long Island resident.
Zachary also is scheduled to play in the U.S. Kids Teen Worlds at Pinehurst No. 5 on July 27-29. In 2016, the youngster won the Boys 12-14 division of the Met PGA Junior Tour Championship. He also was honored as the Met PGA Section Player of the Year in the Long Island Boys 12-14 division.
